C.N. April 2014: Digital Distraction Part 18

(which should probably be Part 9.5)

The sound of something crashing to the ground drew Yugi out of a deep sleep and caused him to blink around blearily, trying to work out what the time was and where the light switch was, the sound not quite registering with him properly as he came round.

As his hand slapped against the switch above his bed, another loud crash caused his mind to wake up, a surge of adrenaline racing through his system as he realised that someone had broken into the shop and was tearing it apart.

Pain was a constant friend as he bolted down the stairs, wand in hand, wanting to know if it was one person or a group of them before he reported in to the cops. Before he could reach the stairwell, the door that led to the shop shuddered in its door frame.

Yugi paused, watching as the door, which was always locked when they shut up shop for the night, shuddered again, beginning to splinter.

Glass breaking from the kitchen made Yugi turn around in that direction, hesitating for just long enough to hear someone moving around on the broken glass, then he bolted for the phone.

He didn’t make it. He was halfway across the room when someone grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him backwards, dragging him across the room and causing him to stumble and fall back with a startled yelp.

The man lost his grip, allowing Yugi to roll onto his side and cast a Stunner at the man, forgetting the International Statute of Secrecy in his attempts to defend himself. The spell struck the man, sending him crashing into the wall and leaving Yugi with a chance to scramble away.

The teen bolted, heading for his bedroom, away from the men who had broken into the shop. Behind him the door finally gave way, allowing access to whoever had entered from the shop below.

It wasn’t until he found someone had broken in through the window he had planned to escape out of that he realised that this wasn’t just a break in. It wasn’t the shop they were interested in.

“Give up Yami.” The man in front of his bedroom window smirked at him as he backed up, trying to hide his confusion as he realised that it wasn’t him they wanted to kidnap, it was his other self who was out at the cinema. “We’ve got you surrounded.”

Yugi glanced over his shoulder to see that they were right, there were two behind him, walls on either side of him and a guy between him and his escape route and he wasn’t going to tell them that he wasn’t Yami. Not if it would keep his other self safe.

“Stupi...”

The man in front of him was faster and a fist connecting solidly with Yugi’s jaw caused him to hit the doorframe hard, dropping his wand which rolled under the desk as his head ricocheted off of the wooden posts with a solid crack.

Yugi collapsed in a heap on the hardwood floor, his world fading in and out of focus as he was forced onto his front and his arms were forced behind his back. One man held his arms tightly, rendering his feeble, dazed struggles useless as another bound his wrists together.

“One down.” Yugi heard one of the men say as he finally lost his battle to stay conscious, “Now to lure in the other one and find that bloody Puzzle...”
