Chris smiled
slightly, remembering how he’d met the blue hedgehog.
He’d rescued Sonic
from his swimming pool.
There was silence
as they munched on cakes and drank tea, but it wasn’t an awkward silence, like
the ones Sam was used too, it was the comfortable silence of friends.
She’d missed this,
being with friends who understood about things and didn’t ask a million
questions, just let the silences speak for themselves.
Even after three
years it wasn’t the silence of I don’t know what to say, because they’d all
saved the world before and they all knew that sometimes people need to just
relax after a big battle.
Sam closed her
eyes, just letting the sounds of the bridge wash over her, the tapping of
buttons, the steady beep beep beep of the Emerald Generator, the hum of the
monitors. She smiled slightly, finishing her tea, the smile vanishing as she reacted
instinctively as someone tapped her arm as they filled her cup again.
“Easy Sam.” Sonic
said, catching most of her spilt tea before it hit the ground.
“Sorry Cream.” Sam
said, helping the rabbit to her feet before taking her mug back from the
hedgehog, “I guess I’ve been alone so long, it’s hard to just relax.”
“It’s OK.” Cream
said, rubbing her cheek from Sam’s blow, “I should’ve asked.”
“It’s not okay; I should have looked before I
reacted.” Sam shook her head, looking at the floor. “Sorry.”
The human found
herself in a surprise hug and couldn’t help but hug the bunny back. “Don’t
worry, I’m ok, and Sonic saved most of the tea.”
Sam smiled
lightly, though Sonic was watching her eyes rather then her mouth and saw the
guilt still lurking.
“You were alone a
long time?” Sonic asked as Sam took her seat on the steps again, leaning
against the railings.
“Three years my
time, three months yours.” Sam shrugged, trying to calm herself. She wouldn’t
be wanted if she reacted like that to every single unexpected movement.
“Three years?”
Cream looked sad, “I’d miss my friends after three days!”
The rabbit sat
down next to Sam and leant into the human woman, trying to offer comfort.
Sam smiled softly,
feeling the soft rabbit fur against her hand. “I’ve got friends again. I’ll be
fine Cream.”
Chris frowned at
her choice of words and wondered what had happened to her old friends.
Comfortable
silence fell again, this time disturbed by Tails muttering under his breath and
Chris asking the kitsune questions every ten to fifteen seconds about the
adjustments.
Finally the two
looked at each other and grinned, “Done.”
“Let’s test it
out!” Sonic grinned.
